26th round prospects performances… Top 3/ Flop 3
By: Evilo | March 5th, 2009Here’s a round up of the U22 performances in this weekend of Ligue 1 action.
Auxerre 1-1 Toulouse
Narry (6) was solid and efficient in the middle for Auxerre.
For Toulouse, Sissoko (5) was underwhelming, missing many easy passes.
Nantes 1-1 Grenoble
Djordjevic (5) missed a very doable opportunity and it cost his team 2 points in the end.
Feghouli (3) was putrid, like often against poor opponents. Grandin (6) had a good solid game offensively and showed his skills without doing too much. Hero of the game was once again Paillot (7) who’s developped a habit of being rock solid defensively (especially in the air) and being a thread on offensive set plays.
Valenciennes 2-0 Lille
No U22 started in this game.
Le Mans 2-0 Le Havre
Finally! Gervinho (7) finally plays a good game, or rather a good half since he didn’t start. He scores a nice goal. Corchia (5) is showing good signs offensively. We’ll see how that evolves. Lamah (3) was shaky to say the least.
Sochaux 1-0 Nice
Erding (6) assisted Sverkos after a nice play by Sochaux and its former U22 favourite of mine Maurice-Belay, who was simply exceptionnal in this game.
For nice Ospina (6) had a good game and made some good saves, but couldn’t do anything on the lone goal. RĂ©my (5) was once again invisible. Concerning.
Lyon 1-1 Rennes
Benzema (6) injured himself after a very under-average game. Pjanic came up late in the game and assisted on Kallstrom’s goal.
Lemoine (5) was still lacking some impact. The guy runs a lot but at some point he has to do more with the ball. M’Bia (6) hurt his opponents physically, that’s for sure.
PSG 4-1 Nancy
Sakho (5) was solid before being injured. He should miss some key games.
N’Diaye (4) did what he could, but this was not Nancy’s game.
It should be noted that Guillaume Hoarau earned a 9 in L’Equipe with his superb performance.
Caen 0-1 Marseille
Always useful to have a guy with this Ben Arfa’s (5) technique but really he should do more with what he has. He didn’t try hard, that’s for sure.
Bordeaux 1-0 Lorient
Traoré (7) played a nice game with lots of offensive tries and some success in his dribbling.
Monaco 2-2 St Etienne
Mongongu played CB with ease, very nice game for him. Nkoulou (3) played in the middle and seemed out of place. Gakpé (3) was horrible. How can he waste his (tremendous) talent like that? Nimani (5) scored a nice goal (though a tad lucky) before being replaced by Mollo who scored one of his own in the extra-time.
For Les Verts, Matuidi (6) had a good tiring game and Payet scored (6) again on a lucky shot. He has things going his way right now and has been decisive.
Top 3
1- Paillot : another good game, another goal, another point. Lyon have a great prospect there.
2- Traoré : great game for him, makes him a legitimate option on the right side.
3- Erding : decisive once again, he helps his team get away with 3 points.
Flop 3
1- GakpĂ© : I’m losing patience with him.
2- Feghouli : same here. I’m angry that he only shows up when he plays a big opponent.
3- Ben Arfa : same here, enough with the underachievers !

I am glad to see Paillot playing so well. He definitely is a good prospect for the future.
Its to bad about Gakpe, I expected more from him but he may go the way of many Monaco prospects, Ligue 2.

Hi,Evilo I am just curious. In your opinion who”s got the best vision in Ligue1 and who r the best wingers?(old school touchline hugging ones, guys who can beat their man)Cheers!!!

If we’re talking strictly vision in terms of inventing passes that nobody anticipates, I’d say some guys that could challenge with that title would be Gourcuff, Juninho, Ben Arfa, Sessegnon…
If we’re talking about vision as “anticipation”, I’d say Lloris and Cris would be well ranked. Cris always has a step above the offense because he feels the game so well.As for pure wingers, I think this season it’s Michel Bastos without a single doubt, but solid players like Rothen and Maurice-Belay are guys I’d take on my team any day.
Wing is not a very deep position because offensive players don’t play wide all the time in french football. Guys like JĂ©rĂ´me Leroy, Karim Ziani, Mathieu Valbuena, Stephane Sessegnon are playing wide but coming back to center half the game.
Govou and Keita could be considered good wingers, but Govou is out for the year and Keita never found his niche in Lyon (though some people are way too harsh on him, not all his performances were bad).Posted from

Thanx 4 your time and insightful reply buddy!!!!BTW what position is sessegnon best suited to?I saw him touted as a good defensive midfielder in 1 article than sum1 else said he is a good winger(which he is IMO)i am confused.Would appreciate your opinion.

Sessegnon is best used in a free offensive midfielder role. He can play either wing with ease (more ease on the right though) and can play center midfielder, where his long passes and vision can be more useful.
The way Le Guen uses him is really fine IMO.Posted from

Evilo, what is your opinion of Hugo Lloris? What do you think he will be able to accomplish? Also, Lloris vs. Mandanda?

I’m firmly in the Lloris camp and have been there for years.
In fact, when Lloris won the EC with the 86 generation I knew we had a phenom.
I love Mandanda and his play with Le Havre and then Marseille is really great.
But he doesn’t have Lloris’ pure quality in terms of explosiveness and authority (especially in the air).I think Lloris is one of the top goalies in Europe, has been even when playing with Nice (I think he’s only starting to show his talents with Lyon, he was much more impressive the previous two years). Basically, if you ask me who the best goalies are, I’d say Buffon, Casillas are the top 2, but after that, Lloris could be named without being ashamed.

When you say it like that you make me wonder if you looked at it from all points of view.
